Electric Run San Diego
October 10, 2013Cara approached me one day and asked “hey, do you want to do a 5k with me?” and of course my initial reaction was “um, not really”. I’m not much of a runner in the sense that i’d want to do it for fun. I’m more of a “i’ll run because we’re playing sports” or “let’s get hell out of here before the cops arrive” runner vs. someone who pays money to do it. She sent me the website, glanced at it briefly and was not impressed.
Before I proceed, I will say this: San Diego was the 3rd location they had on their schedule and only had sample photos on their site. Initially, it was very hard to grasp the draw and awe but I will say I was influenced by peer pressure as Cara had been speaking to our good friend Sarah about doing this with her and her husband. So now it’s time to be a good sport and give this “run” a chance.
The Electric Run is considered a “fun run”, meaning they aren’t tracking your time and while a good majority of people do run, there are plenty of joggers, walkers, and people just out to have a good time instead of trying to get a good time. We didn’t run the entire thing but did a lot more than I expected to. Different parts of the course have different lighting elements and “scenes” so at times we slowed down to take in the sights. At the end of the run, they had vendors, food and drinks to enjoy as well as an after party with a live DJ. We had so much fun we decided to do it again when they returned to town!
First run was on February 9th, 2013 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. They were still new so there were a lot of parts of the course not lit and generally “not exciting”. We provided our feedback as did many others and when they returned on November 9th, 2013 it was a vast improvement with more lights, more music, more interactivity, and generally, more FUN!
Here is our encore video from November 9th where my mom, cousin Rory & his wife Melissa as well as their kids joined us.
