Apple Picking - Red Apple Barn

October 8, 2017

Since moving to Georgia, Cara and I have been wanting to go ‘pickin’ of some sort and she found a good deal of apple orchards in the North Georgia mountains, just over an hour away from us. Looking around, many charge admission + your picking quantity and admission to some of them were north of $15 per person. Luckily, we found Red Apple Barn who only charged $7.50 per adult and had some of the lowest prices for u-pick apples.

We arrived just after lunch and parked in their makeshift parking lot…a recently harvested corn field. We got to choose between 1/4, 1/2 and 1 peck of apples and settled on 1/2 since we like apples, but don’t eat them all that often. Cara had been wanting to make an apple pie so we were specifically on a hunt to find some good ones for that. After getting our basket, we loaded up on a trailer and were towed by tractor across their fields to their apple orchard. The terrain was quite hilly and the weather was still quite warm which means we all got a good workout and required plenty of water upon returning to the car. We found Mutsu, Suncrisp, Cameo and Jonagolds for the pie but had to pick up some Gala’s (Cara’s favorite) and some Fuji’s.

After a quick ride back to the main building, we grabbed our apple donut and fresh apple cider (complimentary for u-pickers) then let Lia play in their little playground before heading back home. The price wasn’t too bad, especially considering you get to pick your own apples straight from the tree vs. off the shelf at the store. You know how fresh they are, you can get a good variety, and you can have some fun doing it. We’ll be back again next year.
