Atlanta Snow

December 9, 2017

We’ve had a few forecasts predict snow but most started to fade and just simply say it was going to be cold. Then as of Thursday, the reports came back saying there was a slight chance of snow in the metro Atlanta area, up to 1-2″. Knowing what I know about snow in Atlanta, I was already prepared to work from home on Friday. The weather system was predicted to come in around 1am Friday morning with the possibility of waking up to snow…well, that’s just what happened.

Lia and I both noticed that it was snowing but not sticking quite yet (which was also the forecast, snow but not much accumulation) so I started working and they got ready for their day. Around lunch we noticed it started to build up a little more and more so we went outside to play in it. At the time, the street was just wet and the yards had a small dusting, which was better than previous years where it was just ice.

I went back to work and kept noticing how much was coming down…it never stopped. Into the evening, still coming down. Overnight? Still. Next morning? Still. Besides maybe a 30 minute span, I don’t believe it ever stopped before mid-day Saturday….nearly 36 hours of snow. Before going to bed on Friday, I measured between 5-6″ of snow depth. As it accumulated on Saturday, I measured a few locations up to 10″ depth. So much for a 1-2″ dusting.

Many downed trees, plenty of people without power, and i’m sure there were plenty of road closures and accidents. Luckily we stayed home and just played in it.
